AH! the tax dollars argument! i hate the tax dollars argument!
My other favorite is the “I donated money to this library once. You are therefore my library slave” argument.
This past week at the library has been literally insane. Last Tuesday was amazing, I ran my book club and all the kids showed up and we had a great discussion and all my favorite families came in and it was a perfect day. Thursday absolutely everything fell apart. The DVD cleaner broke. The copier…
In which I share with tumblr what a tough day working at a public library is like and why it’s all worth it.

Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.
librarylydia:If you go anywhere with me I can guarantee you I will at some point drag you to the local library and make you take a picture of me doing my “AAHHH! LOOK! IT’S A LIBRARY!!” pose. I’m a librarian. It’s just what I do.
In my travels these past few years I’ve started a bit of a collection ranging from Boston to Chicago to Sequim Washington. I hope to add to it over the years, but for now here are my favorites.
Libraries are places of information, a place to find answers.
But take my word for it, sometimes at the library, ignorance is bliss.
Take for instants the grease stained cloth I found in the elevator shaft. The cloth shaped suspiciously like a pair of men’s boxers.
I honestly would rather not…
Me:

Her: “DOCTOR. WHO.”
Me:

Her: “Do you want to know how much sleep I’ve been getting since you gave it to me?!? NONE. All I can do is watch Doctor Who!”
Me:

Her: “I’m not sorry. It’s amazing. Anyway, talk to later, bye!” *leaves*
What can I say? One of the best perks of my job are introducing people to Doctor Who :-)
That and jumping out from under the desk and freaking people out.
They don’t seem to understand that I’m a librarian, which means that at any one time I have at least a couple hardback novels in my giant purse. If anyone comes near me I’ll just start swinging and they’ll never know what hit them.
Why I Want to Be a Librarain
I had to write a speech for my communications class about a perception I had that was changed because of another person. I decided to do one about how much I hated reading when I was a kid and how that had changed dramatically. Somehow it morphed into the reason for why I choose my chosen career path.
So I thought I’d share it with you:-) I wrote it this morning so it’s not perfect yet and this was my first run through so bare with me….

I try. I really do. I put on a pair of jeans and a shirt and I look in the mirror and I envision myself sitting behind a desk like this and I just… I can’t do it.
And then I go put on a cute skirt and a polka dot blouse and put my hair up in a bun and I go to the library.
Way. Over. Dressed.
I think it’s the homeschooler in me. When I went out as a kid, we went to church, or a party, and that was about it. When we did visited friends it was often on Sundays so I was always dressed nicely when I saw people. I remember once I tried to wear pj pants out in public to go grocery shopping. I’ll never forget my mother’s face and I will never, ever try that again. Being dressed down was for home. Being outside home, I was dressed up. And now I can’t break away from it. Causal Fridays are literally impossible for me.
Just thought you might like to know that.
